Moving Preparation Timeline

As Soon as You Decide to Move

  • Purchase packing supplies, such as packing boxes, tape, and packing paper or bubble wrap.

  • Discard items that you don't need or use. You won't miss them.

  • Donate unneeded items to charity or have a garage sale to get rid of them.

As Soon as You Know a Moving Date

  • Consult a licensed Los Angeles Mover and discuss your needs.

  • Place your order when you have a firm move date.

3 Weeks Before Moving

  • Begin packing if you are packing yourself. If you have a large residence you may wish to have a housekeeper or family member help. Packing is a time consuming process so it is important that you begin early. Thorough packing will reduce the cost of your move.

  • Contact people who work with you on a regular basis, such as pool maintenance companies and gardeners, to cancel their services.

2 Weeks Before Moving

  • Notify Utility companies of disconnect date and arrange new services.

  • Have utilities disconnected at closing if the new occupant does not establish new accounts.

  • Notify your TV, internet, and phone land line providers of your move and arrange for transfer to your new residence.

  • File a change of address notice at the post office, making it effective on your moving date or a few days before.

  • Notify newspaper and magazine subscriptions of your new address.

  • Order bank checks with your new address. If you are moving out of the area, establish a new account.

1 Week Before Moving

  • If a house sale is involved confirm that your closing is on track and handle tasks required by your closing agent. Arrange to have your homeowners insurance transferred to your new home.

  • Confirm your service arrangements with your moving company.

  • Clean each room thoroughly as you finish packing. Clean all appliances which will remain and place their manuals in a kitchen drawer.

  • Arrange to have pets and small children out of the way on moving day.

  • If you live in West Hollywood or Beverly hills, go to your city hall to obtain a permit to allow your moving truck to park in front of your residence.

  • If you wish to discard any furniture or appliances, the city offers a free service called bulky item pickup. Call 1 800 773-2489 at least two days before your collection day.

On Moving Day

  • Walk through every part of your residence before the movers leave to be sure nothing has been left behind. Look in every closet and open every drawer and cabinet.

  • Supervise the movers as they unload so that furniture and boxes go in the correct room or area.

  • If you are inclined to tip, that certainly is appreciated. Our movers are strictly forbidden from ever soliciting a tip.
